- PHILADELPHIA – Cozen O’Connor member Adam C. Bonin authored a chapter in the recently released third edition of Political Activity, Lobbying Laws and Gift Rules Guide, published by Thompson-West. Bonin’s chapter is titled “Campaign Finance Law and the Internet.” The book offers advice to practitioners on dealing with political action committees and lobbying regulations, and provides in-depth coverage of the federal laws governing lobbying activities and detailed, technical discussions of tax and reporting considerations. It also covers recent developments in procurement lobbying and state-related lobbying issues.
A member in the firm’s Philadelphia office, Bonin practices in the subrogation and recovery department. He currently represents major insurance companies in a multibillion-dollar subrogation recovery lawsuit against the individuals, entities and nations involved in financing Al-Qaeda, seeking to hold them accountable for the September 11 tragedy. He has also represented clients in both federal and state jurisdictions in matters involving commercial litigation, products liability, antitrust and municipal finance.
Bonin also represents clients in first amendment litigation and election law matters, and has been extensively involved in efforts on behalf of the rights of online speakers. In March 2006, he achieved a major victory before the Federal Election Commission on behalf of leading political bloggers, securing significant new rights for speakers on the Internet to engage in online political speech and advocacy.
Bonin serves on the board of advisors to The Green Bag, a legal journal, for its legal writing project and is quoted regularly in the media with regard to the relationship between politics and the Internet. He is the author of “Keep Blogs Unregulated,” published in The National Law Journal (July 18, 2005) and “An Unfettered Internet Best Serves Democracy,” published in The Philadelphia Inquirer (February 21, 2008).
Bonin earned his undergraduate degree from Amherst College (B.A., magna cum laude, 1994) and his law degree from The University of Chicago Law School (J.D., 1997), where he served as comment editor of The University of Chicago Legal Forum and as an editor of The Law School Phoenix. While in law school, he was a student attorney at the Edwin F. Mandel Legal Aid Clinic. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania.
